Fractal Emergence
Fractal Emergence is an interactive light display that guides the viewer through the process of creating a fractal. The viewer uses the handles on the side of the box to illuminate the iterations of the fractal–starting with one circle, adding three, then six, then twelve, and so on, until a representation of the infinite fractal is illuminated on the bottom level. The effect is mesmerizing. The box and its contents are made from laser cut wood and acrylic, with an internal mechanism that slides a hidden ring of LED lights up and down to cast light on layer after layer of the interior construction. The connection between the tactile and visual experience invites the viewer to linger, explore, and ponder.
Hyperbolic Emergence
Hyperbolic Emergence is an interactive light display that guides viewers to explore hyperbolic geometry. Each layer of laser cut wood and acrylic contains a construction of hyperbolic lines using the Poincaré disk model. Each acrylic layer is a translucent orange whose edges illuminate when viewer maneuvers the hidden LED ring to shine on the layer. Layers are rotated with respect to each other to break the inherent symmetry and provide a visually intriguing scene. This artwork takes advantage of and expands upon the platform created for its sister installation Fractal Emergence. The connection between the tactile and visual experience invites the viewer to linger, explore, and ponder.
